Opt-In
Opt-in is a customer's explicit consent to receive marketing communications via a specific channel. It's both a legal requirement and a best practice for building a quality contact list.
Types of Opt-In
- Single Opt-In: Customer submits their info and is immediately added to your list
- Double Opt-In: Customer confirms their subscription via a confirmation email/SMS before being added
- Implicit Opt-In: Consent implied through an existing business relationship (varies by jurisdiction)
Legal Requirements
SMS (TCPA): Requires express written consent before sending marketing texts. Violations can result in $500-$1,500 per message in fines. Email (CAN-SPAM): Requires clear opt-out mechanism and honest subject lines. GDPR: Requires explicit, freely given consent for EU residents.
