Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
A measurable value that indicates how effectively a business is achieving its goals. Marketing KPIs should connect directly to revenue outcomes, not just activity metrics.
A Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a quantifiable measure used to evaluate progress toward a specific business objective. The “key” part is important — a KPI is not just any metric, it is the metric most directly connected to a meaningful outcome. For a gym trying to reduce churn, the KPI might be monthly retention rate. For a campaign trying to re-engage lapsed members, it might be the percentage of lapsed members who return within 30 days.
Activity Metrics vs. Outcome KPIs
One of the most common mistakes in marketing measurement is tracking activity metrics (emails sent, campaigns launched, posts published) rather than outcome KPIs (customers retained, revenue generated, churn reduced). Activity metrics tell you what your team is doing; outcome KPIs tell you whether it is working. The best KPI frameworks connect activities to outcomes — tracking both the leading indicators (email open rate) and the lagging outcomes (retention rate) to understand what is driving results.
Key Marketing KPIs for B2C Businesses
The most important KPIs for customer engagement and retention businesses include: customer retention rate, monthly/annual churn rate, customer lifetime value (LTV), customer acquisition cost (CAC), LTV:CAC ratio, email open and click-through rates, SMS engagement rate, net promoter score (NPS), and average revenue per user (ARPU). Not all of these need to be tracked simultaneously — the right KPIs depend on your current business priorities and stage.
Setting Meaningful KPI Targets
KPIs without targets are just metrics. Effective KPI management requires setting specific, time-bound targets (“increase monthly retention rate from 92% to 95% in Q2”) and reviewing performance against those targets regularly. When a KPI misses its target, the right response is to diagnose the root cause — not just try harder doing the same thing. KPIs are navigation tools, not scorecards.
