MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)
Text messages that include images, GIFs, videos, or audio in addition to text. MMS messages have higher engagement than plain SMS and are effective for promotions and brand storytelling.
MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is an extension of SMS that allows businesses to include images, GIFs, short videos, audio clips, and longer text (up to 1,600 characters vs. 160 for SMS) in their messages. For marketing purposes, MMS allows you to send visually rich content — a promotional banner, a short video of your facility, or an animated GIF — directly to a customer’s phone as a text message.
MMS vs. SMS for Marketing
Both channels are highly effective, but they serve different purposes. SMS works best for simple, urgent, or transactional messages: appointment reminders, time-sensitive offers, short confirmations. MMS works best when visual impact matters — showcasing a new product, highlighting a seasonal promotion with photography, or adding personality through animation. MMS typically costs 2–3x more to send than SMS per message, but higher engagement rates often justify the difference for promotional campaigns.
When to Use MMS
The best use cases for MMS include: new product or service announcements where images communicate more than words, promotional campaigns where visual design increases click-through, event announcements that benefit from photography, and brand-building messages where personality matters. For routine operational messages (class reminders, payment confirmations, customer service replies), SMS is usually sufficient and more cost-effective.
Technical Considerations
MMS messages can be up to 600KB in size — larger files may be rejected by carriers. Image optimization matters: compress images appropriately and test on multiple devices before sending. Not all international markets support MMS reliably, so check coverage if you have customers outside North America. Like SMS, MMS marketing requires prior opt-in consent.
